Lew culminates his series on President Dwight David Eisenhower, a liberal Democrat who posed as a conservative Republican, a “gatekeeper” positioned to prevent an America First renaissance in our politics and nation. He emphasizes that the significance of the presidency might not be apparent considering it occurred in the allegedly “boring” 1950s. Eisenhower policies held the line for the “bipartisan consensus” which consisted of a continuation/expansion of New Deal policies at home and the building on an internationalist order abroad. More importantly, he contributed five justices to the most radical and destructive Supreme Court America has experienced, starting with his selection of Chief Justice Earl Warren.
At the same time Eisenhower led efforts that dealt several serious blows to the grassroots America First movement, including: 1) preventing frontrunner Robert Taft from becoming president on an America First platform; 2) the calculated destruction of anti-communist hero Sen. Joseph McCarthy; 3) the derailment of the popular Bricker Amendment to the Constitution to protect American sovereignty; 4) the sabotage of the Reese Committee investigation of the social engineering conspiracy against our country; 5) setting back grassroots GOP efforts to take and keep Congress a generation.
