Sound Money, Surveillance State, and Endless War | Liberty Roundtable - 08-17-26

The Liberty Roundtable Radio Talk Show with host Sam Bushman tackles the erosion of American liberty from three angles: the destruction of honest money, the rise of suspicionless surveillance, and the escalation of endless war. With the US-Iran ceasefire deadline expired and a record $1.5 trillion military budget on the table, the constitutional crisis is deepening. Sam Bushman opens with a call for national repentance amid floods in Indiana, a tropical storm in Hawaii, and disasters worldwide, arguing that societal turning away from God is at the root of these crises. He then examines the US-Iran ceasefire expiration, the USS Washington replacing the USS Lincoln after eight months at war, and Attorney General Todd Blanche's refusal to pledge DOJ independence from the White House. Later, guest Lowell Nelson of Campaign for Liberty joins to mark the 55th anniversary of President Nixon closing the gold window, tracing the federal debt from $400 billion then to nearly $40 trillion today. They discuss sound money alternatives, the Flock surveillance camera network cited by Judge Andrew Napolitano, FBI tracking of January 6th attendees, and George F. Will's column on the rise of homeschooling as America's fastest-growing form of education. What you'll learn in this episode: Why Sam Bushman believes natural disasters are tied to societal repentance and what the Bible says about healing the land How the US-Iran ceasefire deadline expired with no extension and why a $1.5 trillion military budget signals more war, not less How Nixon closing the gold window 55 years ago led to the federal debt exploding from $400 billion to nearly $40 trillion and why the dollar has lost 97% of its purchasing power What Judge Andrew Napolitano says about Flock cameras, the Fourth Amendment, and how the FBI used surveillance to track January 6th attendees who committed no crime Why George F. Will calls homeschooling America's fastest-growing form of education and whether it can counter the public school system's suppression of critical thinking Timestamps: 00:00 Show Opening: Right to Be Left Alone 00:17 Natural Disasters and the Call to Repentance 01:24 God as the Ultimate Weatherman 05:43 Domestic Civil War and Political Violence 06:30 US-Iran Ceasefire Deadline Expires 07:03 $1.5 Trillion Military Budget and War Escalation 07:56 Trump Orders Pentagon to Reduce South Korea Exercises 08:34 USS Washington Replaces USS Lincoln in Middle East 10:23 Attorney General Todd Blanche on DOJ Independence 12:35 Lowell Nelson: Nixon Closed the Gold Window 55 Years Ago 15:15 Federal Debt From $400 Billion to $39 Trillion 16:38 Judge Napolitano and Flock Surveillance Cameras 17:28 FBI Surveillance of January 6th Attendees 20:56 George F. [00:00:04] Broadcasting live from atop the Rocky Mountains, the crossroads of the West, you are listening to the Liberty Roundtable Radio Talk Show. We are not sheep for the wolves to devour. Actually, we are the hunters who scare the wolves away.

[00:00:27] Happy to have you along, my fellow Americans, Sam Bushman live. We have the right to be left alone. That's one of our most precious, God-given, inalienable rights. We ought to have in America. But it seems that big government wants to violate that every chance it gets, ladies and gentlemen. Honest money is key. We'll talk about that. Not to mention the fact that our prayers are with the folks in the Indiana area where floods, the death toll rises.

[00:00:57] As the rivers crest at record levels, it's out of control. Flooding for those folks. Also, the tropical storm in Hawaii moves west of Hawaii after dumping a torrent of up to four feet of rain. You got fires all around the world. You got flooding all around the world. You got landslides and mudslides and you got earthquakes all over the world.

[00:01:19] Folks, the world is a dangerous place. And primarily, the ultimate weatherman is not happy with the world because we are not keeping the commandments of Almighty God. That's the reality check that the mainstream press won't tell you, that the weatherman will not tell you. They think that they understand all the weather and they got it going on. They're talking about hurricanes and floods and disasters and earthquakes. And the list just goes on and on. It's tragic all over the world.

[00:01:47] But the truth is, folks, a lot of the weather appeals we're experiencing is because the ultimate weatherman, God Almighty, is not pleased with our wickedness worldwide. Now, I'm not calling you out individually. If you need to repent, the Lord tells you so. By all means, get her done. I believe we all need to repent to a great degree. But societally speaking, there's no doubt we need a humility reality check.

[00:02:10] We need a humble people going to God Almighty in sincere prayer and thanksgiving and repentance and change. And he promises us that if we do so, he will heal our land and protect us. Think about heal our land for a minute, ladies and gentlemen. What does that actually mean? To heal our land, I assume it means we won't have such crazy fires and mudslides and earthquakes and floods. And the list goes on and on. But I will tell you this, though.

[00:02:38] We have needed rain in Utah for quite some time. And we got some over the last several days. And I'm absolutely grateful for it. There was a little bit of flooding, which is sad, and some mudslides, which isn't great. But we do need the water desperately. And when we came out of an event the other night, man, it was a beautiful double rainbow. And what a blessing that is. And what a sign that is from God Almighty that he will not bury the earth and water ever again. And it's a sign.

[00:03:08] And it's a sign that Jesus will come, but not now. And so we pray for the return of the Savior Jesus Christ. Our prayers are with those who are suffering in all kinds of natural disasters. They're unnatural, I might add. They call them natural because they just, they happen. But I say they're unnatural because they're caused by turning against God. Turning against God is not natural or normal. It's a sad state of affairs.

[00:03:37] And the only way to correct it, ladies and gentlemen, and very few people in the mainstream press will have the guts to tell you this, if any. But the only real solution, the only real way back that I know of is if we pray for those who are suffering, if we acknowledge the truth and turn to God Almighty. That is the only hope we have to stop the crises that are coming. And if we don't, I submit, it will get worse. Okay?

[00:04:06] It'll absolutely get worse. So that's a sad reality check that we must face, ladies and gentlemen. And I don't mean to be negative, but our prayers are with all these people. And I don't mean to be negative of the solution. I know people don't want to hear what I have to say. But I'm telling you that if we continue, not only will we have natural disasters that the prophets of ancient times and modern prophets have foretold, but if we violate the principles of family, and I'm talking about the God-ordained traditional family,

[00:04:36] male and female created in them, a male and female joined together in sacred marriage, and in that sacred marriage having fidelity to one another and to their children, that is the key to success. Okay? God is all about his human family. He's the father of that human family. We are his children. I don't care about race or color or any of those kind of things. He is our God. He is our father. And he loves us, his children. But he expects us to obey him.

[00:05:06] He expects us to remember him. He will send his spirit to be with us if we do so. And he will protect us. He's promised us in the Bible that he will do so. He will protect us and heal our land. So I just discussed healing of the land. You don't need to listen to the weatherman of today. You need to listen to the ultimate weatherman. That's God Almighty. And he tells us what we need to do if we want our land to be healed, right? Let's move to the protect us line. It's critical. It's vital. It's important.

[00:05:35] You got to understand it, right? He will protect us from what you say? From war everywhere, foreign and domestic. Sadly, in America, we have a domestic civil war kind of happening. We have the left versus the right, and everybody's kind of at war. You have these crazy people that are going psychotic and going on shooting rampages and everything else. We've got a domestic sickness in America for sure, where we can't agree to disagreeably. We can't settle our differences without political and other kind of violence, right? It's a tragic reality. Thank heavens.

[00:06:05] War has not hit our shore yet in a real sense. We've had unprecedented peace, and I'm so grateful for that. But I'm telling you, it will not last forever. Are we ready if somebody should invade our shores? I don't think so. All of our troops are pretty much overseas around the world and over 130 nations militarily speaking. It's tragic indeed. It's a sad tale to tell. But folks, listen up.

[00:06:30] U.S.-Iran ceasefire deadline expires with no extension and no talks scheduled. Think about that. What do you think of that? So now the peace talks are over because there's none scheduled. The ceasefire is over because the deadline expires with no extension. You think that's going to bode well for less war? Sadly, I think more war is on the horizon.

[00:06:59] And if you don't believe me, then my question to you is why are we asking for $1.5 trillion in the military budget, an unprecedented spend? Never have we spent that much before. Other nations, according to President Trump, are stepping up and spending more as well. So we have to increase our output. They have to increase their output. The only reason would be if there's more war, not less. We're not looking for an off-ramp for the war, folks. We're ratcheting it up.

[00:07:29] But I believe God would have us humble ourselves and turn to him and find a way to not be at war. I believe it's an unjust war and we ought not be there. You say, why do you say that, Sam? Because we don't have the Constitution being followed. The Constitution is the supreme law of our land. If we can't obey our own laws, can we obey God's laws? I think we need to obey our own laws and God's laws. What do you think of that idea?

[00:07:56] Trump orders the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. Why Trump's saying it costs too much money, too great of an expenditure. I don't know that we need joint military exercises with South Korea in the first place. So maybe that's a good thing. Maybe we ought to bring the folks home. But we've been there so long, if we bring the folks home, will it show weakness?

[00:08:21] Will it give enemies the desire to strike and then we're not ready and we have greater problems? We're in a tough situation, folks, and unless we turn to God Almighty, I don't know how we're going to fix it. The carrier USS Washington now heads to the Middle East to relieve the USS Lincoln. So the George Washington going to relieve the Lincoln. And this is an interesting debate. Pete Hegseth and others saying, hey, everything's fine.

[00:08:51] It's been at war for over eight months. Never going to shore. Never report a call. Low on supplies. Mental concerns of the troops. Just a disaster from a cleanliness. You know, problems with the plumbing and problems with the food. It's a disaster. And people are calling that out and saying it's not true at all. Don't know the truth, folks, because you can't trust the media. You can't trust the Trump administration.

[00:09:20] You can't trust senators and Congress members that are against Trump or for Trump. They've all got Trump derangement syndrome. I just want the truth. What's the truth on that ship? And I suspect it's somewhere in the middle. It's not as bad as some of the enemies are claiming. But it's not okay like Pete Hegseth and others claim either. My guess is the truth lies in the middle. But the fact is that we've got to have the Washington replace the Lincoln. That tells me we've been at war.

[00:09:48] And some people say, does that show we've been at war too long, President Trump? And he says, no, it shows we haven't been there long enough. That's an interesting statement for a guy that back on February 28th, when he kicked off this unconstitutional war, he said, yeah, we'll only be there a couple of weeks. Now, literally, we're six plus months into it, right? Right? We're over six months. We're six months into it. And Trump saying, no, it's not long enough.

[00:10:14] How long is long enough without congressional approval? I ask, ladies and gentlemen. How long is long enough, President Trump? Attorney General Todd Blanche in the news. He declines to pledge that the Justice Department will have independence from the White House. He says, I'm not going to promise that. We may or we may not. We're going to do what's right every time. That's all I'm going to commit to. I think he's right about that.

[00:10:43] It's not a debate about independence from the White House or with the White House. It's a matter of doing what's just and merciful. In the Justice Department. That's real justice, right? Justice tempered with mercy. I'm Sam Bushman. Every day, Americans are told to hate each other while the people in power keep winning. But what if there's another path? What if Americans could come together and take this country back peacefully before it's too late? The Democrat murder of America,

[00:12:35] Lowell Nelson with me, campaignforliberty.org. Always doing a phenomenal job. You know, you hear that song, Happy Anniversary, Baby? Well, this is an unhappy anniversary, says Ron Paul. Welcome, Lowell. Well, thanks for having me, Sam. Yeah, it's unwelcome because it's the anniversary of the day Nixon closed the gold window 55 years ago, this month. So in the late 1960s, as folks will remember if they were alive, I guess.

[00:13:04] Anyway, concerns about the dollar stability increased because of President Lyndon Johnson's spending on the war in Vietnam and the Great Society. The spending, which continued under President Nixon, was responded to by an increase in foreign countries converting their dollars into gold. Concerns that the U.S. Gold Reserve was being drained led President Nixon to close the gold window. End of quote. Well, Sam, as you know, that was the wrong action to take.

[00:13:31] What action should Nixon have taken? Sam? In my humble opinion, he should have reduced spending to constitutional levels and not been a socialist in spending on government programs that were unauthorized and unsupported by the supreme law of the land. There's no authority for the general government to spend that kind of money. They were never delegated to that authority whatsoever. So one, you quit spending money you don't have. And number two, you get out of the war. Okay, that's what we're doing now. Trump is basically on the same trajectory that Nixon was.

[00:14:00] Now, I know we want to say, oh, no, he's not. Yeah, it's identical. We're spending way too much money on too many government programs that are not authorized by the people, that are unconstitutional because they violate the separation of powers. They spend money on things that are not authorized. You say, well, Congress authorized them. They don't have the authority to authorize them. So we're playing games here. We got congressional mandates or edicts or whatever you want to call them that are violating the supreme law, which takes precedent, the supreme law. So they need to stop. That's number one.

[00:14:30] Number two, we need to get out of all these wars, though. We'll never do well when we spend ourselves into oblivion of a war. Now we've spent ourselves into oblivion and we've depleted our supplies to where we're very vulnerable right now, Lowell. And so we see the same thing repeating right now. Lowell, Ph.D.: Exactly right, Sam. It's exactly the advice Nixon should have taken. Stop the war because it's war and death. Those are two great enemies. Our founders knew that. They said that as much. And so if we'd stop these unconstitutional wars,

[00:14:59] we wouldn't have the need to inflate the dollar and spend the dollar, create money out of thin air. So there would have been no need to close the gold window. So anyway, that's a great analysis, Sam. And just to help us understand, the federal debt when Nixon did that was only $400 billion. Now that's a big number, but it pales in comparison to the size it was 10 years later at $1 trillion. And today it's in excess of $39 trillion.

[00:15:29] We're probably approaching $40 trillion right now. And that increases by a trillion bucks every three to five months. While our dollar seems to deplete in value, it's already lost 97% of its purchasing power since we put that plan in place as well. So it's disaster on steroids. The problem is only patriots like you and I that have become odious to the system are the ones that bring this up. President Trump doesn't even bring it up or take action to change it. Yep, you're exactly right.

[00:15:56] And some of us are doing what we can to restore sound money. In other words, there are sound money systems where you can be spending gold and silver to pay for goods and services instead of the fiat dollars. You can purchase these gold and silver species in order to retain your purchasing power of your dollar. And these are things that probably thinking people should do.

[00:16:25] Rather than closing the gold window, let's close the military-industrial complex, Lowell. Yeah, absolutely. And the surveillance complex. Speaking of that, I just want to be left alone, my friend. That's right. And that's the subject of Judge Andrew Napolitano's column this past week, the right to be left alone. And basically, he's talking about the flock cameras, these surveillance cameras that seem to be cropping up everywhere.

[00:16:51] I think the number is like 39,000 cameras across the country so far, something like that. And they just, well, in his words, he says, quote, these cameras allow government agents to record, identify, catalog, and retroactively track the movements of people who have committed no crime, are suspected of no wrongdoing, and have done nothing to invite government scrutiny. That's not public safety.

[00:17:18] It's an assault on individual privacy, end of quote. And, you know, we saw what happened to people who attended Trump's speech on January 6th, right? FBI agents interviewed everyone whose phone placed them at the event, people who did no crime. In fact, several of our good friends were among those who were interviewed, Sam, people who lived right in Salt Lake City. They went out to the event, and when they came back, they found themselves several months later being questioned by law enforcement agents, by FBI.

[00:17:47] FBI, and, you know, forced to prove their innocence, essentially, even though they were not in a court of law. So serious developments there. And so people wonder, you know, could these flock cameras be used and abused? I guess, could they be abused by law enforcement? They already have been big time, and cities have reported on it, and some cities have jettisoned the program over that. Now the flock camera people say they're going to crack down on the cops' misuse. Now you've got the flock camera private sector, you know, locking down the cops.

[00:18:17] I mean, at some point, everything is topsy-terzy crazy. The only answer is to quit violating our privacy. Leave me the heck alone, man. Don't do that stuff. But they won't listen, Lowell. Well, you know, one article I read, Sam, said that Utah had very strong laws against lawful surveillance. We aren't in the number one state now. You know, there are other states that are number one, meaning they have the very strongest laws.

[00:18:44] But, you know, it does help if the state legislature steps up and says, you know, we're not going to do that here, or we're going to set boundaries on how you can use that information, Mr. Law Enforcement Officers. You know, that's very helpful. I agree, but there's still cameras up everywhere already. Mm-hmm. Yeah, the Washington state, apparently, according to this article, has the very strongest of laws. Utah has strong laws. Washington state has very strong laws.

[00:19:12] So, you know, we really need to, you know, states need to take hold. Most states don't have laws against it, by the way. Most states don't. So take a page out of, you know, the states that are doing something about it and, you know, demand that they, too, make laws against the abuse of this surveillance instrument. That's what I'm suggesting, Sam. Amen. Couldn't agree more.

[00:19:38] And Judge Napolitano finishes up by really giving an example of January the 6th. That's critical. That's right, Sam. Actually, that was my example. But quoting him, he says, there is a profound difference between investigating a specific crime through constitutionally authorized surveillance and constructing a permanent infrastructure of suspicionless surveillance. The former begins with evidence and seeks information relevant to a particular government purpose.

[00:20:07] The latter begins with everyone and waits for the evidence. End of quote. Right. So we, the answer, folks, really is in the Constitution. It is our blueprint for liberty. The answer is not better government surveillance. The answer is the Fourth Amendment, which requires, you know, a warrant before a search is done. Basically, no government surveillance without search warrants. That's the key word.

[00:20:33] And the warrant must be specific of the places and the things to look for and everything else. It can't just be these broad, crazy warrants like King George used to issue and everything else. So stand up for your freedoms, ladies and gentlemen, or you'll lose them. Now, there's a column that has good news about classrooms, and I half agree and half don't. Let's talk about it, Lowell. Yeah, because I half agree, half don't, too, Sam. He seems to be, George F. Will talks about classrooms of the future. He seems to be really quite in, I guess, overly optimistic, in my opinion.

[00:21:04] He's talking about how dangerous it is for us to grow up without the ability to think critically and to speak critically of our governance. And, of course, that's what our current public education model is designed to do, right? Produce dependent drones who do very little critical thinking and don't have attention spans that are very long, right? Well, for the past 113 years, he writes, the state has been doing, quote,

[00:21:29] a remarkable job building a warmongering leviathan on the grounds that a hostile world requires it, end of quote. And he refers to the year 1913, which saw the creation of the Federal Reserve and the ratification of the 16th Amendment, which brought us the income tax. And then he puts it in these words, quote, the combination of the income tax and a legal counterfeiting machine got underway innocently and then soared to unimagined heights as citizens were crushed with impoverishment

[00:21:59] and war-making resistance to an increasingly buffed state suicidal, end of quote. Well, that has been our situation for over a century, folks. The state continues to grow, and as it grows, our liberty shrinks. And that's our current situation. But the development that he gets to eventually in this column is the idea that education will be done at home.

[00:22:28] He claims that this learning through instructional videos at home, which you can play over and again if you want. You can replay them, relearn, review them, and so forth. He says the trend is encouraging. According to the Washington Post, he says, quote, homeschooling has become by a wide margin Americans' fastest-growing form of education

[00:22:53] as families from upper Manhattan to eastern Kentucky embrace a largely unregulated practice once confined to the ideological fringe. And this is where I say I agree with him that homeschooling could be the answer if parents were educated and if parents would stand up. And I agree that it's growing, and I commend them for that growing. My concern, though, is that it's not growing fast enough. Even after COVID, you know, we took our kids home for a little bit. Many people saw the problems in the government schools, but most people put their kids back in school.

[00:23:23] They basically, even after they graduate from a homeschool of some kind, they end up going to some college because you've got to have that to get whatever degree they want or whatever. And those, I mean, you can't even go get a degree now without being absolutely turned into a socialist for the most part these days. And so I appreciate it, but the education department has still way too big of a hold. We were promised it was going to be removed. Now I don't see it being removed at all. And so, you know, it sounds great, but in my opinion, it's good news in reality, but it's fantasy land, Lowell.

[00:23:53] Yeah, that's my opinion too, Sam. All right, summarize the last piece so people can find it, would you? Yeah, Patriots won't let communists take back America. It's in lewrockwell.com. Go there and peruse the various articles there. Patriots won't let communists take America. And I sure pray he's correct on that fact, and I'm certainly one of them that will do my absolute best to make sure that never happens, Lowell. Okay, man. Thanks, Sam. Thank you, brother. Godspeed.
