Can you love your country without pledging allegiance to its government? And when political loyalty clashes with faith and constitutional principles, which comes first?
On this episode of Liberty Roundtable, Sam Bushman joins Dr. Scott Bradley and Jacob Oaks for a spirited discussion about the Pledge of Allegiance, sacred covenants, and the proper relationship between God, family, and country. They explore differing views on allegiance, the meaning of constitutional oaths, and the principles they believe should guide public service.
The conversation then turns to their assessment of the midterm elections, criticism of both major parties, Republican prospects for 2028, and potential risks during the lame-duck session. They close by considering whether a principles-first political movement can offer a meaningful alternative.
At the heart of the discussion is one question: Are we standing for enduring principles, or simply standing with our political team?

[00:00:05] Broadcasting live from atop the Rocky Mountains, the crossroads of the West, you are listening to the Liberty Roundtable Radio Talk Show. Happy to have you along, my fellow Americans, Sam Bushman, Dr. Scott Bradley, freedomsrisingsun.com, and Jacob Oaks with me, liberty-united, or unitingliberty.com. Check out his incredible work there. He's a public speaker.
[00:00:34] He's an educator. He draws on history, philosophy, theology, and American founding principles for his guidance. He's involved in music and the arts and a whole lot more. Anyway, we're talking about the Pledge of Allegiance and why people would pledge or why they would not, and I agree with Dr. Bradley. We need to be careful on both sides of this. People mean well, and their feelings are very deep-rooted about this topic.
[00:01:01] Jacob is saying he only pledged allegiance to God, and I understand that. Makes sense to me in a lot of ways, but I think the picture is a lot broader than that. Continue, Jacob. You were saying? Yeah. Well, as I mentioned before, politics is a downstream of principles. Principles are truths. They're timeless truths. And the word is from God. It began with God.
[00:01:27] So long as people are committing themselves to God first, then our civics will naturally, it will flow naturally into our civics. I love our country. I put my hand on my heart, pour the flag, love it, respect it.
[00:01:50] But look, if we commit ourselves, if we give loyalty to a country, then you're giving loyalty to your government. You can love your country and have a sense of national pride for your country without swearing an allegiance to it. Okay. I appreciate it.
[00:02:19] So there's kind of the perspectives, ladies and gentlemen, and I want to kind of reset this a little bit. See, to me, history starts with God. And, you know, when we were on the earth, God and man, and he created man, and man had an allegiance to God. And, you know, you love him because he loved us first and everything. Then, you know, Moses came along, and there was the Ten Commandments, and one of them said, you know, then you had the two great commandments, right? Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, and strength. That's allegiance in my mind.
[00:02:49] And then love thy neighbor as thyself. And so I look at that, and I kind of say, okay, we're the great family of God. So it's God, family, and country. And I have allegiance in those orders. So God first, family second, country third. And in so much as, you know, God's perfect, so he keeps his end of the bargain all the time. But I have covenants with him to keep my end of the bargain. And when I do, I'm blessed, and I have ultimate liberty. The second one is family. And for me, family, I have a covenant with my wife.
[00:03:19] If, that's to honor her, to be true to her, to be faithful to her. That's not a once-in-a-while thing or a, well, most of the time, except for if, you know, thing. It's not that. It's 100%. It's a covenant with her. To me, covenants have allegiance. And to me, country is third from that. And I agree. I don't have allegiance to the IRS. I don't have allegiance to criminal government. I don't have allegiance to parties or anything else.
[00:03:43] But the government that's instituted among man, by God, for the rights of people. I have allegiance to those things. And I have allegiance to things in certain order. I mean, God is above my family. My family's above my country. Downstream from God, family, and country, I have other allegiances to some degree.
[00:04:04] And so it's important that we kind of realize, you know, just because I have allegiance to my constitution and to my country and to the republic for which it stands, that doesn't mean that that allegiance trumps everything else. There's a priority of values. You know, there's a moral imperative of value priorities here. You know, thou shalt not kill. That's right. Unless my life's being threatened, then I sometimes need to take a life to preserve life. So, you know, everything has its moral relative imperative, if you will.
[00:04:34] God's first, family's second, country's third. Anyway, that's kind of how I view it, Dr. Bradley. Any final comment from you on this? Yeah, well, as is normally my case, I better be more brief than I should be. But that's a backward statement. At any rate, yeah, the founding fathers, I think, had a pretty clear understanding of this. And let's look back to Blackstone's commentaries, which all the founding fathers read.
[00:04:59] If you go to his original volume one and you read pages 39 and 40, at least, you'll find that he ties all law back to a divine law. And his inference is that that is the basis of all law. So, some of the things that you talk about, the IRS and all this kind of nonsense that's come up that completely violates the original intent of the founding fathers,
[00:05:27] is a perversion that nowadays most people think, oh, that's always been here. It takes precedence. It's always the right thing to do. No, it's not. The basis of our liberty was absolutely clear-cut, understood, and set forth. All men are created equal. They're endowed by their creator. There's creator twice. With certain inalienable rights. And Blackstone talks about those. That's where they got into our declaration.
[00:05:54] And the purpose of government is to secure those rights. And the consent of the governed and the right to alter or abolish government, all of those things were built into that premise that became the Constitution. And so, the Constitution has those foundational things built into it. And it does have that tie to the divine. I truly am absolutely sure. Yeah, and that's why I pledge allegiance to that. I don't pledge allegiance to the criminal BATF and all these other garbage.
[00:06:24] But we need to realize, otherwise, you can't pledge allegiance to anything on this earth, period, end of paragraph. Because marriage has been perverted and ruined. But to me, marriage is a godly, family-ordained thing. God put Adam and Eve together, and he's the author of marriage. And so, I believe in marriage as a sacred, honorable covenant. Anyway, we can go down this rabbit hole forever. Jake, do you want to have the final word? Yes. We talked about Noah Webster.
[00:06:49] Let me read the Webster Dictionary definition of allegiance. The tie or obligation subject to his prince or government. Sorry, but I don't give an obligation to my government. That's where I stand. Okay. When you swear an oath, does that denote allegiance?
[00:07:22] An oath is an oath to uphold the Constitution. I know. Is that allegiance, though? It's an allegiance to truth. All right. Not to the republic. Yeah, to the godly principles of the Constitution culminating in republic. But Dr. Bradley? Is an oath a pledge? Well, honestly, if you hold any office, you're going to have to take an oath.
[00:07:52] The fact of the matter is, if you read Webster again about what an oath is, even if you don't say, so help me God in that oath, go back and read about the oath. It imprecates. Even if you don't say, so help me God, it imprecates the vengeance of God. His word is imprecates. That means it invites the vengeance of God if you don't do it. But, yeah, in other words, an oath is a sacred covenant that you've got to honor or you're at the mercy of God as a result of your dishonoring of that. And to me, that's allegiancy.
[00:08:19] And so it runs through God's allegiance runs through all things if done proper and honorable. And all things that are not proper and honorable betray. And so I don't pledge allegiance to any betrayal of any covenants. Anyway, enough of that, Dr. Bradley. You had an incredible webinar last night. And you guys had observations on the midterm, right? Yeah, there were six topics we discussed at 15 minutes each. And we got about 15 minutes left here.
[00:08:48] So if there's any discussion you want to have about anything, we probably ought to – it'll be extremely – Well, I just want to say the Republicans got slaughtered. The Democrats are all gloating. The Republicans are on the ropes and feeling bad. They're wondering how they can turn it around. Some are admitting the truth of a lot of the reasons they lost. Others, like Donald, are in clear, flat-out denial where they're delusionary, saying if Donald was on the ballot, we would have won in a landslide. But since he wasn't, we all lost. When I say we, I just mean the Republicans.
[00:09:18] I'm not a Republican. But to me, I don't care who wins or loses in these elections because I believe it's a clown show. I believe they're really the left and right wings of the same bird of prey. It's a uniparty. And they both share power. And they're all involved in secret combinations that are destroying the country. And I honestly think, sadly, yes, the Democrats will do a lot of bad things. Some Republicans may not. But at the end of the day, the Republicans are only a little bit behind the Democrats. They just do it behind your back as opposed to in your face. But the same thing happens. But I know this.
[00:09:46] Patriot groups do better when their, quote, team, so to speak, doesn't have power. And so even though it's sad that the Democrats are going to run us off the cliff to a great degree like Lemmings, the fact of the matter to me is that, hey, at least constitutional groups will get some funding and at least moral groups will get some heyday and some focus because there's a perceived threat now that we didn't see before. That's my take of the whole thing. Ron Paul said it best. The Republicans deserve to lose.
[00:10:14] But the Democrats don't deserve to win. And I think that kind of tells the whole story. Do you want to give a quick comment on that, Jake? Well, it's a clown show. I mean, that's all we can say. Whenever I hear, see on social media, conservative friends saying, that's it. The solution is a red wave. We need to organize better. I'm like, oh, my gosh. When will you learn? When will you learn?
[00:10:46] Dr. Bradley? Ron DeSantis made a comment that I think was pretty astute. Spot on. No question. He said the Republicans had a near extinction event happen. And it was monumental. Now, of course, I've been saying for months since February 28th, if we had this discussion a year ago from today, it would be far different.
[00:11:14] The legacy, quote, unquote, of Trump and everything would have been much more easily defined. And right now, his legacy basically, I think, has been poof, gone. I do not think he is being honest with himself. Of course, that's what narcissists do is they never take the blame for anything.
[00:11:35] So, yeah, this thing was self-inflicted, not just by the Trump administration, but by Republicans in general, both in the national level and in the state level. All factions, by the way. They were completely complicit. It was yes or yes or three bags full, whatever Donald Trump said. And it went off the rails. The Republicans got spanked.
[00:12:02] And honestly, I don't know as we can see how badly they were spanked yet. No, we can't. They're still deciding a few things. But I know this. It's way more than anybody predicted. Absolutely. And it will be decades. Decades. I do not believe. Well, and there's never been a better chance for a third party. Not that I'm really a third party advocate. But I'm saying right now, if any third party or any group is smart, they'll want to create a third party and push right now and give people a real alternative.
[00:12:31] For 2028, there's never been a better opportunity than right now. And honestly, there's a lot to overcome there, too. But just one of the discussions we had last night during the webinar was how could the Republicans respond and actually come back? So the point is, can the Republicans bounce back for 2028 elections, right? No, not unless they do certain things.
[00:12:59] And we discussed what those certain things must be. And it involves the 25th Amendment, by the way. And so, I mean, there are some things. But barring that, I do not think the Republicans can win the 2028 election. And if the Democrats win, they'll have four years. And then they'll be reelected and have another four years. And you look at the implications of this thing on appointment of judges, for example. Oh, it's a disaster.
[00:13:28] There's never going to be in many of your listening audience's lives another Republican-appointed Supreme Court justice. And whether that's good or bad. I mean, Earl Warren was appointed by a Republican. So we know so many of the Republicans really have blown up the Supreme Court with bad appointments. Well, and they've backed Obamacare and everything else. So there's real questions about will Donald Trump be impeached? There's questions about Pete Hegseth, what's going to happen to him.
[00:13:57] Really, it's a broader question of what's going to happen to us. Are they going to impeach a lot of these people and try to go after people like me and you and throw us in jail? And Dr. Bradley first, then Jake. I don't think they're going to go after us, Sam. I don't think they even know about us. I mean, it's sad but true. They put me on the congressional record twice saying I was one of the greatest threats in American politics. They said that I was the nexus of hate in America. I don't know. I pray you're right, but I don't know.
[00:14:25] No, I don't think that they're going to come shut down your organization or anything like that. But I do believe that there's a lot of stir that's going to happen. And I'm almost positive. I mean, about as positive as you can be in politics that Pete Hegseth will be impeached. And how that is handled with the resignation and or an impeachment and a conviction. And how does Pete Hegseth get replaced?
[00:14:54] If it comes down to a Trump appointment after January, Secretary of Defense or whatever they're calling themselves nowadays, is going to be a real brouhaha. There's going to be some real interesting dynamics there. This thing has changed the political landscape of the United States. And I think it's yet to be seen where it's going. The Democrats are going to basically create a virtual political civil war over this. Jake?
[00:15:26] Well, you see, one, about a civil war, there was a great American prophet named Joseph Smith. And before the formation of the Republican Party, you had the Democrat Party, the Whigs, and some third parties. He said there will be two great political parties. One, the Democrat Party. The other, the Republican Party. They will go to war with each other.
[00:15:54] And out of this will rise the independent American Party. And the boys from the mountains will save the Constitution as it hangs by a hair. That's one thing I want to share. The other, I actually do think they'll come after people like me and Sam. Absolutely. Because the Republican Party and the Democrat Party is one big unit party.
[00:16:24] And even though we don't have millions of followers, like Ben Shapiro or some other voices out there, they're just preaching headlines. They're just preaching propaganda. Me and Sam are out teaching principles and Scott Bradley as well. That is what they do not want. They do not want the average American to be awakened, to be empowered with actual principles.
[00:16:52] Because it doesn't matter how many followers we have online. What matters is the impact. And the true measure of a leader is how many other leaders he creates. There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. So, Jake, do you think that the Republicans have a chance to bounce back for 2028? Dr. Bradley virtually said no. And I would say no as well unless they do certain things. And they're not going to do those things.
[00:17:16] They would need to abolish the IRS or the Federal Reserve or something significant enough to truly bring the people back. And I don't think they'll do it. Can they recover for 2028? Be quick. If they were less tone deaf, they really had a chance at it this time. They were not preaching solutions. They just preached fear mongering about Democrats getting in. So, to get in next time, it's going to have to be massive. Like undoing the Federal Reserve.
[00:17:45] But they can't because they're bought by them. So, I don't think we should have that. They're not paid for it, and that is the problem. All right. It's not going to happen. Dr. Bradley, there's going to be serious danger during the lame duck session. And this is always the big danger when lame duck happens because they don't have any check on their behavior, right? Yeah. I wish there were time to discuss the big concern I have during this two-month period. And all sorts of precipitous things could happen.
[00:18:15] There's going to be, I think, a tendency for Trump to do something really bellicose that would tend to really disrupt so much. Netanyahu could do so. We've talked about how Netanyahu is supposed to be kind of a lame duck prime minister at this point. But he still is prime minister, and he could do a whole bunch of things.
[00:18:38] And other countries likely will perceive, and they do from the responses I've seen from around the world, they feel like that Donald Trump and his administration has been repudiated by this election. And therefore, they're perceiving that the nation is at a more vulnerable place. I mean, could China say, hey, this is a good time to, you know, paddle our way across the Straits of Formosa?
[00:19:04] All of these kind of things on an international basis could really, really turn the apple cart over. Yeah, you might, instead of an October surprise, have a lame duck surprise, huh, doctor? Absolutely, it could happen. And I think that there's going to have to be a steady hand on the tiller, which we don't really have right now. We've got a bunch of clowns, bozos, and buffoons that are running things.
[00:19:29] But honestly, we have come to the point where we have selected the kind of people that we want to be governed by, and they're not good and wise and honorable governors. Jake, do you want to comment on that real quick? I just, I think we need to come back to honor. What makes America great?
[00:19:57] What made it great is the principle. We need honor in this country again. I agree with Scott Bradley. All right, there you have it. There are principles that can save this country. And as Jake wisely put out, the principles are the most important. And, you know, we need to be covenant people with God and focus on the principles. That's the only way back, doctor. Well, absolutely.
[00:20:25] And, you know, we've dedicated our life to doing that kind of thing. There aren't a lot of avid listeners, though. As we started out this little discussion, the parties have captured the hearts and minds of the people. And if you don't have a D or an R behind your name, a third party has really got a strong uphill battle. And that's part of the problem is there's lies being told to keep people captured in that paradigm.
[00:20:53] And I'm not so sure that the people at this point are willing to receive the correction that's needful. No, they're not. And the real question is Jesus will return. The only question is how much liberty we'll have along the way. And the less liberty we have, the more brutal and difficult that will be in the meantime. And I think that's kind of the core thing people don't really understand or realize.
[00:21:14] But that to me is where the core is, is, hey, if we keep the commandments of God, I think we can really, really count on and hope for a very peaceful country. If we violate the commandments of God, though, all gloves are off. We don't have the protections that we would have if we keep the commandments of God. Jake. Amen. Amen. There you go, Dr. Bradley. You want the final word?
[00:21:44] Well, what a deal. I'd been 15 minutes last night on the elements of restoration of liberty and proper government. And that was the, I mean, I had to throw out probably nine-tenths of, this was something I had prepared in advance. I do my own. You've got to understand it's really simple. All we've got to do is keep our covenants with God Almighty, keep our covenants to our families, and then make sure we obey the supreme law of the land and the Constitution with absolute fidelity, and we won't have any problems, sir.
[00:22:13] Most people are not making those covenants, Sam. I agree. Most people don't have a clue what that really entails. They're unfaithful to their wives. How can they be faithful to their country, to their principles? Or to their God, for that matter. I mean, so here's the problem. I mean, we have abandoned with our humanistic religion that we've put out as our civil religion for the nation, the whole basis of our salvation. And so how can we look for a nation to be saved?
[00:22:41] I got one question to bait you both really quick so that we can end the hour on people wanting more. And here it is. So here's the question. Can you run for office under a party banner and not have allegiance to that party? I think most parties are trying harder and harder to limit your ability to do that. They want a pledge. I understand, but I'm just saying, can you run under a party banner and not have allegiance to that party? Because you're advocating for it. You're promoting the party.
[00:23:09] You're advocating for that and saying, hey, me and this group I'm with are the solution kind of a thing. Jake? I'll tell you, the Independent American Party Foundation is 15 principles of good government written by Ezra Capenson and H. Verlin Anderson. There's not time here to go through the 15 principles.
[00:23:32] But my commitment is to a gathering of people, an association of people, to put forward candidates that agree with those 15 principles. Anybody that does not follow those is not in alignment with the IAP. And so it's all about the principles. All right, we need to do another show. And the reason I did that, ladies and gentlemen, wasn't to bait anybody, but it's really to set up another show. I think it's worth talking about the IAP and talking about the principles.
[00:24:02] And as long as the AIP remains a free association group and doesn't pull the liver of government in their favor as a party, they may be just fine, right? It's when they do those criminal secret combination things that they cross the line. So there you have it. Dr. Bradley, thank you so much, sir. Well, it's always good, Sam and Jacob. I guess we'll revisit this at some future date. freedomsrisingsun.com. Jacob Oaks, thank you so much, sir. Thank you.
[00:24:33] liberty-united.com to learn more about that. God save our constitutional republic. Thank you, everybody. It's worth it when you try.
