[00:00:04] Perhaps surprisingly, in colonial America, New England ministers played a key role in rallying popular support for liberty. Hello, I'm Ron Edwards. On today's page from The Edwards Notebook, the New England ministers pressed their congregations to overthrow King George because unlike 501c3 ministers of today, they believed that rebellion to tyrants was obedience to God.
[00:00:29] For many pulpits, ministers recruited troops and strengthened them for battle. Those church leaders understood that the Bible places great emphasis on due submission to civil authorities, but they also noted that many passages approved resistance to ungodly authority. It is therefore no coincidence that one of the watchwords of the American Revolution was, No King but Jesus.
[00:00:52] Most of the patriots found in their faith and in God's word, the courage to risk their own lives and properties in order to break the tyranny of unjust human authority. According to their Christian worldview, obedience to God took precedence over loyalty to country or government. Their primary allegiance was to the Lord Jesus Christ, the original liberator.
