Point of View March 26, 2025 – Hour 1 : Chemical Abortion

[00:00:04] Across America, Live, this is Point of View, Kirby Anderson. Thank you for joining us. We're so grateful that you can join us today because we're going to spend some time talking about some very important issues and I think you will appreciate that.

[00:00:27] First of all, we're going to get into this issue of the abortion pill. We have the chemical abortion booklet out here. We had an earlier one on the abortion pill. I'll explain a little bit more about that in just a minute. We're going to be talking with our good friend and co-host Liberty McCarter and she of course also does the Know Why podcast. We next hour will also be talking with Chelsea Heumann and we may get back to that topic, but we have other things to talk about as well.

[00:00:52] Not the least of which is what's happening in the area of education and there's even a Senate Doge Caucus which actually is taking on some of the tougher areas including Pentagon spending and things of that nature. So I think you're going to really appreciate these two hours that we're going to spend. And first of all, let me come to Liberty because I guess the obvious question is we published a while back your piece on an abortion pill.

[00:01:17] I'm holding up this one even thicker on chemical abortion and in some respects there was a need to do a new version wasn't there? Yes, so it's great to be here Kirby. The two big reasons that we wanted to update this booklet when I wrote the first booklet a few years ago, I cited a statistic from 2017 that chemical abortion or the abortion pill made up 39% of all abortions in the US.

[00:01:42] Well, now it's 63% of all abortions in the US. Also at the time that we published the previous booklet, the FDA had temporarily lifted restrictions around these dangerous medications citing COVID as the example. Now those restrictions are permanently gone. So the rate of abortion is increasing and it is because of chemical abortion or the abortion pill in the United States.

[00:02:08] I might just mention that if you actually are one of the individuals as a truth team member, you will be receiving it. I don't know if it's quite landed in the houses already, but it's just a good example of why we're doing what we're doing this week. We are on the third day of our truth team week and in order to give us some perspective, Colin Lambert. Hey, it's great to be with you. And as we go through the program today, in some respects, this has kind of got a theme. It's almost the trifecta here. First of all, it is the young voices, because both Liberty and Chelsea are younger than I am, but almost everybody's younger than I am. I guess that fits into that category. Both, of course, female voices, but also voices that are pro-life voices.

[00:04:52] So I think you're going to really appreciate some of the conversation we're going to have here as well. And Liberty, just before we take a break, I guess some people say chemical abortion, abortion pill. What is that exactly? Can you explain that? Sure. So the abortion pill, also known as chemical abortion or sometimes medication abortion, is actually a two-pill regimen that women can take. And usually it is recommended within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

[00:05:18] What a lot of people don't know is that it is four times more risky, actually, for a woman than surgical abortion. And right now, because of the political climate that we're in, a lot of women, young girls even, are getting pills sent to them by doctors in the mail, doctors who have never verified how far along they are in their pregnancy, and they are going to the ER. They're having traumatic experiences. And, of course, the unborn life is lost in addition to the risk to the mother's health.

[00:05:47] And so for pro-lifers, it's really important for us to be educated on this issue because this is where the abortion fight is happening right now. And it's so incredible. Colin, I was just thinking about, first of all, this is a great resource. It's one of the benefits, of course, of being a Truth Team member. But even for our listeners out there that maybe have a pregnancy resource center, it would be good to get a few of these to hand. They obviously understand some of these issues already, but this has changed the abortion debate in dramatic ways.

[00:06:15] I'm thinking pastors out there need to get this as well because you may be counseling an individual that may not even seem abortion-minded, but you're not sure. You want to warn them about the dangers and give them a biblical perspective. [00:09:02] In her book, Uncommon Courage, constitutional lawyer Keisha Russell warns of the seeds of tyranny that have taken root and reaching a critical tipping point. She was on my radio program recently to describe what is happening and to expose the tactics of forces attempting to undermine the foundations of this republic. She begins by talking about the foundations for freedom in this country that come from Christianity. The framers had a biblical view of government and of human nature. That is why our republic is constructed this way.

[00:09:30] She then talks about how tyranny and totalitarianism has spread in other countries and applies those historic patterns to the U.S. She believes we have an opportunity through the church. She has been defending the religious liberty of Christians and others and commends them for their courage, hence the title of her book. She applies her biblical worldview to many of the contemporary issues of our day. A Supreme Court decision about contraception led to the infamous decision about abortion.

[00:09:55] Once life was redefined, it was only a matter of time before marriage would be redefined. She focuses due attention on America's original sin, slavery. And in many ways, the argument justifying slavery was only slightly modified to justify abortion and even legalizing dehumanization. It led to the legalization of infanticide. How should we respond? We should live with purpose. We should pursue a kingdom agenda. We should stand for what is right and resist the pressure placed upon us.

[00:10:25] She also has instructive suggestions on how to improve our criminal justice system and public education. Finally, we need to speak boldly. We should recognize truth in a world filled with historic propaganda. Put simply, it's time for Christians to take a stand. I'm Kirby Anderson, and that's my point of view. And I thought we might get into that because some people wonder, okay, what about this idea of abortion pill and a morning after pill? Can you sort that out for us? Sure.

[00:14:25] So this is just, again, a great resource because some of the things we cover are how much abortion is increasing, you know, how popular chemical abortion is. What is the difference between chemical abortion and a contraceptive, an emergency contraceptive? And then what does the Bible have to say? How does that apply to all of this? Yes. And so one of the things that you have to look at is how these pills work, which I explain in the booklet.

[00:14:52] One, the morning after pill, a lot of people assume those are abortifacient. Not always necessarily. It just kind of depends on when it's taken and different ones work different ways to impact a woman's hormones. With the abortion pill, though, that regimen is always intended to end a life that has already begun in the womb. And tragically, that is what is happening so often today, which is why we need to understand this.

[00:15:20] One of the things that also caused you to want to write this longer and more detailed one on chemical abortion is the fact that so much of this is deregulated. And in the past, there were really some very significant problems that surfaced. Because if you were talking about any other drug other than one related to abortion, we would never have fast-tracked this. And yet that is the case.

[00:15:46] And so you have a whole section which goes on with a number of footnotes called deregulated and dangerous. Can you take us through that? Yeah, so I think it's important to also look at when the FDA first approved the abortion pill regimen, which was in 2000. And it was under pressure from the Clinton administration. So there has always been a political agenda behind getting these in the hands of women.

[00:16:08] But there was still something called a REMS requirement, which meant that women had to be evaluated by a doctor before they were prescribed these pills. Again, a doctor needs to rule out that they might be having an ectopic pregnancy, which can be deadly. They need to verify how far along they are. And so that is completely gone.

[00:16:29] As I mentioned before, unfortunately, you have doctors and providers sending these pills over the mail, oftentimes to people who are posing as pregnant women. But they might be abusers, abusive partners that are actually forcing women to take these pills. And these women end up in the hospital. And there are news stories about that, far too common. So those are some of the things to know about the regulations.

[00:16:55] You know, one of the things I was just thinking about, Colin, as we're going through this, is most people probably have never heard this. I mean, even if they went to a doctor, they might only hear bits and pieces. And it's not necessarily something a pastor is going to address from the congregation. And except for maybe at some of the pregnancy centers, I don't know too many people talking about it. And this has changed the abortion debate almost overnight. Even the news industry very rarely gets into the details. And when they do, they're often wrong or they're slanted so far one direction.

[00:17:24] You can't really get the truth out of it. So, again, as we talk about with Truth Team Week, point of view is anchored to the truth. Not only the facts about the subject that's being talked about, but the Bible and what it says about the subject that's being talked about. And these booklets are so helpful. But she says Point of View was a lifeline for her at that time because you didn't have as many homeschoolers at that time. So fast forward a few years and I'm coming along. And I grew up listening to Point of View. My parents homeschooled me. I remember listening in the car. We would listen over lunch.

[00:25:45] And it really helped to shape my worldview because I heard you, Kirby. I heard Penna. I heard Marlon discuss cultural issues, news of the day. And even though as a child I didn't always understand everything I was hearing, what I was hearing were people who were thoughtfully considering the news and thoroughly discussing it, but then applying biblical principles and biblical truth to it.

[00:26:14] And so we listened to a lot of talk radio, but Point of View stood out with really bringing in that biblical perspective. And I actually went on to major in journalism myself. And as I entered the world and I was interning and working for a while in Washington, D.C., I'm starting to vote as a young adult. I'm seeing the cultural issues around me and I would go back to a lot of the principles that I heard on Point of View as a child

[00:26:40] because that shaped my worldview in terms of applying the things I was learning in church to what's happening in the world. And so I'm a homeschool mom now and the Lord's brought me full circle to be with Point of View. Hadn't even thought about that. And then other significant dangers of chemical abortion. Can you speak to that?

[00:29:00] Yeah, so when you have something that is proven to be so dangerous and there is so much potential for risk, again, a very strict timeline in which this can even be taken. And then you're saying, well, we don't need any sort of doctor verification or evaluation before these pills are sent out. Then think about it. Anybody can order them.

[00:29:26] So there's news stories about an abusive husband who put the pills in his wife's drink and she ended up in the emergency room. Even a mother who ordered the pills on behalf of her teenage daughter who reportedly wanted to keep her baby. And the doctor sent the pills and the mother forced the child to take them. She ended up in the ER as well. And tragically, her baby was lost. So, again, this is another angle that we have to think about.

[00:29:54] And they're doing this in the name of women's rights and women's empowerment. But women are being harmed, not to mention the unborn children that are dying. So this is just such an important issue. This, again, Colin, is not something you hear whenever there's an issue about abortion or even chemical abortion. Never talk about how it could be misused. And we know all sorts of examples of actually being misused. And, again, if you do hear about it, are you hearing the truth? Yes.

[00:30:20] And most of the time I can tell you you're not hearing the true story or you're only hearing a very small piece of the story. I think the fact that you all have created a booklet that really digs into some of the facts, the fact that you talk about it on the air during the program, it's a reminder that Point of View goes beyond just the headlines to some of the really important issues of our day. And, again, what the Bible says about it, how we should live as followers of Christ in the midst of what's happening,

But one of the articles I posted by Cal Thomas, he said, How did I and my parents and my grandparents and ancestors, going all the way back to the founding of the nation,

[00:36:50] manage to get a decent education before the Federal Department of Education? Okay, tongue-in-cheek on that one for sure. But he points out that if indeed you are convinced that spending more money would help, we have over these last many decades actually increased spending, tripled, increased by three-fold increase. And it hasn't turned out so well.

[00:37:15] And as a result also points out that a recent Gallup poll shows that the amount of dissatisfaction that parents are having with the public schools has increased from already 62% a number of years ago to 73%. So these areas of concern are even larger. So what about this? Because you have been homeschooled, but you've also written about the public school system. What's going on?

[00:37:40] You know, I think if we want to address the root issue, what I think it is, just for a moment, is that we've stopped educating people. Instead, we have this federally controlled system that is trying to churn out workers or political activists. We've seen more and more political agendas being pushed in school. And then you have kids that are graduating and they can't read.

[00:38:07] And so one of the things I actually love that Cal Thomas said towards the end of his article is that even though he wasn't an A student, the quality of his education prompted him later in life to pursue knowledge and history and other subjects. So when you have an educational system that's not only failing to teach the basics but failing to equip people to continue learning and love learning for their entire life, then you are really failing them.

[00:38:32] And I think that's what so many people are dissatisfied with and why you see now over 3 million people homeschooling in the United States today. Well, that is something else that he raises because, and this gets back to what's going on in Springfield, Illinois right now, and that is, he says, just how desperate are the people in the educational establishment? Well, just look at the Illinois legislature. This particular bill, if passed, would severely harm the growing homeschool movement.

[00:38:59] The bill would require homeschool families to submit forms each year to their local public school that includes names, birth dates, grade levels, home addresses, on and on. If you fail to submit those forms, you could be subject to criminal truancy penalties. Then I love his next line. Never mind that fewer than one in three Chicago public school students can read at the grade level. But this reminds me of something that you're familiar with, and that is we, on point of view, and you certainly working with the Homeschool Legal Defense Fund and others,

[00:39:29] have seen some very significant threats to homeschool, haven't you? Yes. So, you know, when I tell that story about my mom being arrested in the 80s, I think like, oh, you know, that's so funny that happened so long ago. We don't want it to happen again. But there have been bills, one comes to mind in the 90s in Congress that would have severely restricted homeschooling. And I know that Marlin mobilized Americans to flood the phone systems of Congress

[00:39:55] and educate their representatives about that bill and ultimately defeat it. So that's one of the things that I'm thankful that point of view does is really not just inform, but equip people to make a difference. Education is a big issue. It always has been here, Colin. And that's another reason why I hope people will think about supporting point of view. Well, making sure each and every day that they have the resources that they need. You do that. Your team does that every day, making sure they have the educational material,

[00:40:24] making sure they understand what the Bible says about each one of these topics. That is something that's happening every day here on point of view. You can count on that.
